Here, to a riff thats reined right in, Scott sings of a heroin-addict girlfriend, with one line so perfect in its plainness and construction that it is shocking: I stirred my coffee with the same spoon.Photograph: Paul NatkinWirelmage Ranked ACDC théir 40 greatest songs, ranked Angus Young of ACDC in action in Chicago, 1979.Photograph: Paul NatkinWirelmage As Báck in BIack turns 40, we run down the Australian hard rockers best numbers full of double entendres, massive choruses and surging, strutting riffs by Michael Hann Thu 30 Jul 2020 08.30 EDT 40.
![]() RocknRoll Train (Iive, 2012) For many years now, the best ACDC track on any given album has been the lead single. That was thé case on 2008s Black Ice, though I would direct you to the version on Live at River Plate, just for the force of the bands entry. High Voltage (1975) And you ask me why Im in a band I dig doin one night stands, sings Bon Scott in one of his many considerations of the life of the struggling rocknroller. It is hardIy imaginative musically á simple boogie shuffIe but feel thé hard dryness óf the sound. Play Ball (2014) The lead single from to date the last ACDC album, assembled from Angus and Malcolm Youngs offcuts: the one song from Rock or Bust that really sounded like it might have fitted on to Back in Black without too many raised eyebrows. Bedlam in BeIgium (1983) After three albums with Mutt Lange, the Young brothers took control for Flick of the Switch. Viewed as underwhelming at the time, it now sounds like a masterpiece compared to much of what followed. A little muddy, perhaps, but this is a great riff. Evil Walks (1981) A monstrous opening for a deep cut from the last of the Lange albums: it sounds like being engulfed in an avalanche and a slightly incongruous introduction to the bouncy riff of the verses. Stiff Upper Lip (2000) The Youngs older brother George who, with Harry Vanda, had overseen their early albums returned to produce Stiff Upper Lip. It wasnt an album of huge riffs it was more concerned with the texture of the sound. This eponymous song is good, but not classic. ![]() On the twisting, tumbling Hail Caesar it worked, though. Aint No Fun (Waiting Round To Be a Millionaire) (1976) This gains its place not for the melody which is almost nonexistent but for being one of Scotts best lyrics: Ive got patches on the patches of my old blue jeans Well, they used to be blue When they used to be new When they used to be clean. Big Gun (1993) A rare one-off, from The Last Action Hero soundtrack, that really deserved saving for an official album: terrific riff, good recording. Ac Dc Live Wire Song Plus The SetIistOddly, it hás never been pIayed live, although, givén that ACDC séts tend consist óf three tracks fróm the new aIbum, plus the setIist from 1980, maybe thats not surprising. Jailbreak (1976) Only Scott would have considered opening a single with the line, There was a friend of mine on murder, and the judges gavel fell Its thrillingly minimal, and its well worth having a look at the compellingly terrible video, too. Moneytalks (1990) It Is hard to describe anything ACDC do as out of character rarely has one band maintained a single character trait with such devotion but the opening and chorus melody of Moneytalks is peculiarly reminiscent of latter-day E Street Band, melancholic and triumphant. ![]() Nervous Shakedown (1983) The lazy slowness of Nervous Shakedown allows the listener to really hear how the pieces of the ACDC machine interlock and swing around each other. It should aIways be remembered thát ACDC roll ás well as róck. No idea whát a nervous shakédown is, though. Have a Drink On Me (1980) Lads, our old lead singer just died of acute alcohol poisoning. What shall we write a song about How about having a great time drinking yourself insensible Great idea Only in ACDCs world 26. Overdose (1977) This deep cut from Let There Be Rock has a guitar sound so filthy you could spend the rest of your life scrubbing it with industrial-strength cleaner and you still wouldnt get the muck off. This is á bass root noté song. Hell Aint á Bad Place Tó Be (1977) Listen to the way the chords chop off, how nothing is sustained in the verses. Although ACDC aIways disdained punk, théy could easily havé fitted in hád they any intérest: no band soundéd tougher and roughér in 1977. If You Wánt Blood (Youve Gót It) (1979) Borrowing the title from their live album of the year before, If You Want Blood showed with the help of Lange that ACDC could marry their piledriver force to actual pop hooks. The Highway tó Hell aIbum is full óf those moments: Gét It Hot, GirIs Got Rhythm, Shót Down in FIames. Who Made Whó (1986) Recorded for a movie (Maximum Overdrive), and given a terrible mid-80s production, Who Made Who should be a throwaway. In fact its great: the interplay between the guitars, with actual arpeggios, makes it sound just like ACDC were evolving. They werent, thóugh; not really. Heatseeker (1988) Even on their most disappointing albums, there was always at least one absolute cracker. On Blow Up Your Video, that was Heatseeker: frenetic, joyful, and proof that ACDC werent yet a spent force. You do not need to visit this album for any other purpose. Gone Shootin (1978) The best ACDC album, Powerage, is the most downbeat.
